NEW 2024 Hot Wheels casting Proton Saga

In 1985, the Proton Saga saloon made its debut, marking a significant milestone in the automotive industry. This Malaysian creation was officially launched on July 9, 1985, and it had its roots in the second-generation Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore platform. Powering the Proton Saga was the reliable 1.3-liter 4G13 Orion II engine, providing the vehicle with the performance it needed to make a name for itself.

As the Proton Saga continued to evolve, a notable development came in January 1987 when Proton introduced a new variant powered by the 1.5-liter 4G15 engine. This enhanced engine option broadened the Saga's appeal and performance capabilities.

Midway through 1987, Proton unveiled the Proton Saga Magma, a variant that offered both mechanical and cosmetic upgrades. This refresh injected new life into the Saga, making it an even more attractive choice for discerning buyers.

Expanding the Saga lineup further, in October 1987, Proton introduced the Proton Saga Aeroback, a hatchback variant that brought a different dimension to the range. This new addition catered to a diverse range of preferences among buyers.

Taking its journey abroad, on March 16, 1989, Proton launched the Saga in the United Kingdom. To suit the preferences of the British market, the saloon models were rebranded as the Proton 1.3 and Proton 1.5. Meanwhile, the hatchback versions received additional 'Aeroback' badging. Proton's advertising campaign highlighted the combination of Japanese technology with Malaysian style, a blend that resonated well with consumers.

The Saga's arrival in the UK made automotive history, as it quickly became the "Fastest selling make of a new car ever to enter the United Kingdom." Proton exceeded its 12-month sales target within just six months, a testament to the Saga's popularity and the value it offered to customers. The Proton Saga effectively competed in the market, drawing customers away from established Eastern European brands like Lada and Skoda. Notably, it also attracted consumers who typically leaned toward Japanese carmakers. Brands like Nissan and Toyota had moved up-market, positioning the Saga as a desirable alternative.

Continuing its journey, in August 1990, Proton introduced the Saga Megavalve in Malaysia. This upgraded version featured a more powerful 12-valve engine. Additionally, subtle alterations were made to the exterior design, including a new grille, trim, and rims. Safety enhancements included the inclusion of rear seat belts and a third brake light as standard.

The Proton Saga Megavalve was then introduced to the United Kingdom in January 1991, where it underwent a name change, becoming the Proton 12-Valve. The Proton Saga's journey exemplified how a vehicle could not only capture the hearts of consumers but also carve its own path in the competitive automotive world, blending technology with style and earning its place in automotive history.
