The Hirohata Merc, a 1950s lead sled custom car, holds the esteemed title of "the most famous custom of the classic era."

This iconic vehicle set a new standard for style and attitude, leaving an indelible mark on custom car builders of its time. Featured prominently in various magazines during its heyday, the Hirohata Merc has continued to captivate enthusiasts over the years, earning recognition on Rod & Custom's "Twenty Best of All Time" list in 1991.

Hirohata sold the car and it changed hands several times. Jim McNiel eventually purchased it for $500 in 1959. McNiel used it as a daily driver for years, then placed it into storage. Ultimately, he restored the Mercury to its original configuration.

Despite changing hands multiple times and spanning more than fifty years, the car still retains its legendary status as "the Hirohata Merc."
